Unprotected flues are the main cause of structural decay in chimney stacks. Rain, Birds and Squirrels (both nests and droppings) all cause problems. Open flues are exposed to winter rain soakings and the freeze thaw cycle causes degradation of the mortar lining and the masonry. The birds and squirrels block chimneys with nests, cause havoc and an incredible sooty mess if they fall in. Decaying bodies produce unpleasant smells, flies, and maggots and are a health risk.
C-Cap chimney cap
For out of use chimneys is designed to help minimise heat loss from disused chimney flues. It provides 100% protection of the flue against rain, hail, snow, nesting birds, leaves etc.. – protecting it from damage while still allowing ventilation of the flue.
Colt Cowls
For coal wood gas and oil use aerodynamic principles to create lift at the top of the chimney as air moves over it. This can help or cure downdraught depending on it’s cause and it can shift residual fumes.
